Festive cheer for East Lothian pubs as council grants extra opening hours for Christmas and Hogmanay

Pubs and restaurants will be able to serve alcohol until 2am over this year’s festive holidays in East Lothian.

The council’s licensing board has announced a general extension to serving hours on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

The extension, which applies to onsales premises only also apply on Hogmanay and New Year’s Day.

The festive cheer was announced during a virtual meeting of the board today.

In a statement it said: “There will be no general extensions outwith these days although any applications for extended hours outwith the general extension will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

“There is no need for licensees to apply for the general extension to 2am. On sales premises can utilise these hours to the extent they consider appropriate.”

East Lothian premises were given a general extension for two weeks over the festive period until it was scrapped three years ago at the request of the county’s licensing forum.

The forum argued that only a small number of premises took advantage of the extension outwith the main holiday dates.
