Festive bin collections in Wigan cancelled due to snowy weather conditions

Bin collections in Wigan have been cancelled due to adverse weather conditions.

Parts of the town have been covered in snow and the cold weather is creating icy road conditions for some drivers.

As a result, Wigan council has announced that no waste pick ups will take place today, although residents have been advised to leave bins out for collection as soon as lorries can return.

Today's weather has created major problems on roads across Greater Manchester, including multiple crashes on the M60.

In a tweet, a spokesman for the council said: "Due to today's weather conditions all scheduled waste collections will not be taking place.

"Please leave your bins out as usual and our crews will return as soon as possible."

A Met Office weather warning for snow and ice is currently in place across Greater Manchester and will remain throughout the day.

Forecasters expect no further snow today but the temperature will not rise above 3°C and will feel much colder because of chilly winds coming from the north.

More snow could fall overnight but is likely to be followed by rain tomorrow morning, the Met Office says.
