Festival with 'circus-like' events approved for north Liverpool

Plans for a multi day arts festival that will see “circus-like” events held on a north Liverpool green space have been given the go ahead.

Bridge, organised by Culture Liverpool, received approval for an events licence from Liverpool Council’s licensing and gambling sub-committee.

It will take place in a 72ft long and 19ft high bridge structure on Millennium Green, just off Breeze Hill in Walton, later this week.

The sub-committee had called the application before them after an objector said that they feared not being able to leave their home due to disruption from the festival.

However, that person did not show up to this morning’s meeting and sub-committee members said they were satisfied with the arrangements in place for the event, which will not involve any alcohol being served.

A representative from Culture Liverpool at today’s meeting that the events, which involve “circus-like” performances aimed at “bridging the gaps between communities”, had been discussed with police, local residents and others to ensure they didn’t disturb neighbours.

She said: “From our perspective, we wanted to make sure that we were in contact with all those who would be affected by the event and we were in contact with relevant parts of the council early on.

“We have been in contact with the safety advisory group and with environmental health, as well as the police and residents.

“In terms of noise, our design ensures that the PA system faces away from the neighbouring residential areas to limit that disruption.”

She added that while the licence organisers were applying for would allow up to 5,000 attendees, tickets across the Friday and Saturday had been limited to 2,000.

She said: “So far, we have allocated 1,200 tickets for the Friday and 1,100 for the Saturday. I say allocated because the event is free but it is ticketed.”

After brief deliberations, the sub-committee granted the licence as applied for, meaning the event can proceed.

The event is produced by Coventry-based company Imagineer Productions and is created by artistic director Orit Azaz.
