When you think Canberra, you don't necessarily think hip hop.
Garema Place is hardly a substitute for Compton, Los Angeles. And yet it is the location for this weekend's Street Dance Festival.
All elements of hip hop will be on show including dance performances and battles, music, fashion stalls and street art installations.
"Hip hop brings a really diverse range of cultures and backgrounds. It brings people together because the definition of hip hop is all about spreading peace, unity love, by having fun," festival director Chip Lo says.

"That's what has found its way Canberra because we have a lot of youth that are very stylish. But also, we have hip hop artists in Canberra that have made it fairly big.
"We have had big names coming from Canberra in the music scene, as well as on the dance side of things. We have people back up dancing for Janet Jackson, for example. So we definitely have names that are coming out of Canberra and its hip hop culture."
As well as Saturday's festival, Sunday offers a range of workshops, with local and interstate teachers sharing their craft, as well as the history and culture of hip hop.
Saturday, 10am to 6pm at Garema Place. Sunday's workshops run from 11am to 2pm, at various locations. For more information or to register for the workshops go to streetdancefestivalcbr.com.
