Festival in Aurora to focus on children

The event will run from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Aurora Transportation Center Parking Lot at the corner of Spring Street and Lincoln Avenue.

The traditional Latin American event focuses on children. The free celebration is being held in partnership with the Aurora Public Library, West Aurora School District 129, East Aurora School District 131, Oswego School District 308 and Indian Prairie School District 204.

This year's theme is "Promoting Science" and all school districts have contributed funding to support the distribution of over 5,000 books to children who visit literacy stations staffed by volunteer teachers at the event.

Activities will include stage performances by the West Aurora and East Aurora Children's Choirs, singers from Oswego School District and Indian Prairie School District, Ballet Folklorico Quetzalcoatl, Simply Destinee Dance Team, Aztec Dance Troupe, and Los Tiliches del Baul Puppet Company from Guanajuato, Mexico.

Other organizations providing free children's activities include SciTech Hands On Museum, the Aurora Police Department, the Aurora Fire Department, Sonos de Mexico, and the Fox Valley Orchestra. A rock wall sponsored by the Three Fires Council Boy Scouts of America and several bounce houses and inflatable obstacle courses will be onsite for the children as well, event organizers said.
