ATAMI, Shizuoka -- Some 5,500 fireworks lit up the night sky at Atami Port in Atami, Shizuoka Prefecture, during a festival held with hopes of the area recovering from a mudslide disaster that happened earlier this year.
The mudslide occurred on July 3 in Atami's Izusan district, killing 26 people and leaving one person missing.
Regular fireworks events were canceled or postponed after July due to the coronavirus pandemic.

With the support of the Cultural Affairs Agency, all eight fireworks shops in the prefecture worked together to hold the festival.
Fireworks events will be held in the future, mainly on weekends.
"We want fireworks to be a catalyst for recovery," said Mikio Nakajima, chairman of the city's tourism association.
