Ferrying freight to King Island

Currie wharf, King Island in Tasmania

Analysis has found that the number one commodity shipped to and fro across Bass Strait are empty shipping containers.

Chairman of the King Island Shipping Committee Jarrod Reeman says consolidating the movement of empty containers is part of the solution to lower shipping costs.

Yesterday the King Island Shipping Committee met as part of their goal to improve freight services and reduce costs.

Jarrod Reeman says the cost of freight for the island cost almost twice as much as shipping costs for mainland Tasmania.

He says the committee is putting together business cases that will provide sustainable economic development for the island.

Those industries include dairy, beef cattle and kelp but part of the solution lies in generating new businesses.
