Ferry Road partially closed as unsafe tree outside police station threatens to topple over

A busy Edinburgh road has been partly closed off as officers deal with the threat posed by an unsafe tree in the grounds of a police station.

Ferry Road is temporarily shut outside Drylaw Police Station as strong winds continue to batter the capital.

Police tape was placed around the scene and the road closed to traffic after officers became concerned by a large tree swaying in the gusts.

One local jokingly asked if officers were waiting for backup from ‘special branch’.

Bus services have been delayed and diverted, according to Lothian, while the incident is dealt with.

The 21, 27, 29 and 37 services are affected by the closure, with those making journeys urged to check the latest information before heading out.

Officers have meanwhile urged motorists and pedestrians to avoid the area.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene at Davidson’s Mains on Friday following reports a taxi had been crushed by a tree falling in high winds, while Edinburgh Airport’s COVID-19 testing centre has been temporarily closed due to the blustery conditions.

Inspector Scott Kennedy of Edinburgh Drylaw Station said: “Officers in Edinburgh are currently in attendance at the car park outside Drylaw Police Station and on Ferry Road to assist with road closures while a dangerous tree is assessed for removal.

"We are working to re-open the road as soon as is safely possible. We would like to thank the public for their continued cooperation."
