Ferry companies report boom in duty-free shopping by bargain-hunting passengers

Ferry operators have seen duty-free sales boom since restrictions were lifted, according to industry body Discover Ferries.

This year’s re-introduction of onboard duty free shopping has seen a hike in pre-Christmas sales as passengers take advantage of discounted gifts and festive drinks on services to the Republic of Ireland, France, the Netherlands and Spain at the start of the year.

In the run up to Christmas, passengers have been taking advantage of savings on board – up to 40 per cent off High Street prices on perfumes, cosmetics, jewellery, beers, wines and spirits.

More unusual items available on board are also favoured by passengers, who want to pick up something they can’t get elsewhere.

Scottish operator, Caledonian MacBrayne offers a selection of active clothing wear for wild swimmers, hikers, cyclists plus branded clothing and prints.

Equally, ferry-themed toys such as ship building sets and soft toys are proving popular gifts for prospective mariners and future naval engineers.

Operators are also seeing increased sales of gift vouchers to give family and friends their own travel options.

Abby Penlington, director Discover Ferries, said: “We have seen how eager Brits are to experience travel again, whether it is a staycation in the UK, Isle of Man or Channel Islands, a sail and drive tour around Ireland, France, Spain or the Netherlands or simply a day trip on the Thames or across to the Isle of Wight.

"The myriad gifts that ferry operators provide, from experiences to toys and more traditional duty-free items mean the British public no longer see ferries simply as a way to reach different destinations but as a retailer and provider of unique travel experiences."
