Ferries from the UK to Europe are getting new ‘sleeper lounges’

A P&O rendering of the final ‘Sleep Lounge’ design - (P&O Ferries)

Passengers on overnight ferries from the UK to the Netherlands will soon be able to book a dedicated seat to get some shut-eye.

P&O Ferries has announced the launch of a “Sleep Lounge” on its North Sea route between Hull and Rotterdam.

From 13 July, crossings will feature the dedicated lounge with 36 recliner seats for passengers.

Customers who use the new facility will be offered a complimentary blanket to use during the journey, with USB charging points available at the seats and lockers provided for larger items.

According to P&O Ferries, the new lounge reflects the line’s “continued focus on expanding the range of experiences it offers passengers on the North Sea route between Hull and Rotterdam”.

Onboard restaurants, bars, coffee shops, entertainment and World Duty Free shopping will all be accessible to passengers who use the Sleep Lounge alongside existing cabin options.

Foot passenger fares start from £47 per person each way between October and December, with customers travelling by car able to book from £121 for one car, one passenger and one Sleep Recliner seat on selected dates.

Louisa Bell, chief commercial officer at P&O Ferries, said: “Every journey is different, and we want customers to have the choice of options that work best for them.

“Whether they are travelling with friends, heading away for a short break or starting a longer trip into Europe, the Sleep Lounge is another way to make the crossing while experiencing the atmosphere and facilities that come with travelling by ferry.”

In April, Air New Zealand announced it is launching an innovative way for economy passengers to sleep on long-haul flights with bunk beds on board.

The airline opened bookings for its “Skynest” seats on 18 May, which will allow economy class passengers to lie flat on flights.

These will debut on select ultra-long-haul flights between New York and Auckland, with travel from November.
