Ferrero adds to Kinder products being recalled amid salmonella fears

Ferrero has issued a fresh warning over its Kinder chocolate products amid concerns over a salmonella outbreak. The sweet giant had already warned people not to eat some of the Kinder Surprise eggs after a number of people, including children, fell ill.

Now the Food Standards Agency has said the firm is recalling more items. It has issued a new list of products to avoid with details of what to do if you have bought them.

These now include some Easter treats as well as other standard products. They say do not eat any of the affected items but instead contact them for a full refund.

The FSA said: "Ferrero is recalling the above products. Point of sale notices will be displayed in retail stores that are selling these products. These notices explain to customers why the products are being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the products. Please see the attached notice."

Giving the reason it said: "The possible presence of Salmonella in the products listed. Symptoms caused by Salmonella usually include fever, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps."

Kinder said on its own recall notice: "We are voluntarily recalling a selection of Kinder products, which have been manufactured in Belgium, as a precautionary measure, in relation to a number of reported cases of salmonella."

The affected products are:

  • Kinder Surprise 20g and Kinder Surprise 20g x3. Best Before Dates up to and including October 7, 2022
  • Kinder Surprise 100g. Best Before Dates between April 20, 2022 and August 21, 2022
  • Kinder Mini eggs 75g. Best Before Dates between April 20, 2022 and August 21, 2022
  • Kinder Egg Hunt Kit 150g. Best Before Dates between April 20, 2022 and August 21, 2022
  • Kinder Schokobons 200g - Best Before Dates between April 20, 2022 and August 21, 2022

It added: "If you have bought one of the selected batches of Kinder products as detailed above, do not eat it. Instead check if you have bought the affected best before date of the specified Kinder product.

"The toys included in these products are not affected. Contact the Ferrero consumer careline on consumers.uk@ferrero.com or consumers.ireland@ferrero.com to obtain a full refund."

In the official warning Tina Potter, FSA Head of Incidents, said: "We have taken action along with local authorities and authorities in Belgium to minimise the risk based on the evidence so far. We welcome the precautionary approach being taken by Ferrero and are advising consumers not to eat any of the products listed in the FSA alert. It is really important that consumers follow this advice to avoid the risk of becoming ill with salmonella poisoning.

“We know that these particular products are popular with young children, especially as Easter approaches, so we would urge parents and guardians of children to check if any products already in their home are affected by this recall. The food business involved has voluntarily carried out this product withdrawal and recall and we are working closely with them and their competent authorities to identify the precise cause of this outbreak. We are also working closely with UK and international partners including UKHSA and Food Standards Scotland.”
