Ferrari chief Mattia Binotto has hit out at the decision not to penalise Max Verstappen after he won the Austrian Grand Prix following a coming together with Charles Leclerc.
The victory was not made official until three hours after the finish, as stewards investigated whether Verstappen unfairly ran Leclerc, who was leading at the time, off the track.
They concluded Red Bull’s Verstappen made contact with Leclerc at turn three on lap 69 of the 71-lap race but it was “a racing incident”.
Binotto said the ruling was “the wrong decision” but that the team were looking to move on from the situation “to support the sport”. He added: “Charles left the entire space, he had no fault, a collision happened and he has been forced off the track.”
But Red Bull boss Christian Horner said of Verstappen: “He won the competition in the braking area. He was slightly ahead. It is for the other guy to back out and try the undercut. It’s a slam dunk, checkmate.”
