Ferrari SF90 Stradale unleashed as 1,000hp plug-in hybrid

New supercar mates turbocharged V8 with three electric motors.

Is this a limited production Fezza?

Ferrari has unveiled its first-ever plug-in hybrid model to secure its future with supercars.

Called SF90 Stradale to reference its F1 racing programme into road cars, the mid-engined two-seater is meant for series production and won’t be made in limited numbers.

The design of the SF90 Stradale is quite different from other Fezzas currently on sale and features surfaces that take great interest in aerodynamics. Note how the rear lamps look less circular than in the F8 Tributo and 812 Superfast.

Ferrari has also made significant strides in the cockpit which now incorporates digital screens, head-up display and steering wheel with haptic functions. The new electronic gear operation on the console apes those used on classic Fezzas of yore.

Is that V8 a new development?

Ferrari has taken the award-winning 3.9-litre V8 from the F8 Tributo (and 488 Pista) and bored it out to 4.0-litre. Aside new intake and exhaust manifolds, the fuel system has a higher injection pressure.

As a result, the SF90 Stradale produces 780hp at 7,500rpm (but capable of revving to 8,000rpm) and 800Nm at 6,000rpm. Transmission is via a new eight-speed dual-clutch automatic.

The real headlines come in the form of the hybrid system highlighting one electric motor placed between the engine and gearbox at the rear and two independent ones on the front axle.

This makes the SF90 Stradale Ferrari’s first all-wheel drive sports car. And with a combined output of 1,000hp, the SF90 can sprint from 0-100kph in 2.5sec and 0-200kph in 6.7sec before maxing out at 340kph.

To help its green cause in city areas, the plug-in hybrid allows for 25km of all-electric driving at speeds of up to 135kph.

How much will the damage be?

If you mean pricing, Ferrari has yet to disclose how much the SF90 Stradale will cost. However, it surely won’t be cheap with some people at Ferrari suggesting a higher price tag than the 812 Superfast, which currently retails at 31 million baht in Thailand.

However, it has been pledged that the SF90 Stradale won’t cost as much as the limited production LaFerrari and other hybrid-powered hypercars like the Porsche 918 Spyder or McLaren P1.

Ferrari’s model onslaught will continue this year when it launches another three new models making it a very busy time for the suits at Maranello. Expect first deliveries of the SF90 Stradale to start early 2020.
