Ferrari scoops 2018 International Engine of the Year award

Twin-turbo V8 takes coveted crown for the third time ahead of Porsche's 3.0-litre flat-six engine.

Ferrari’s all-conquering twin-turbo V8 has taken the 2018 International Engine of the Year award for the third year in succession.

The Italian supercar brand has become the second carmaker to achieve such a feat after Ford, which scooped the coveted title several years ago with its 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol-turbo engine.

The 3.9-litre unit from Ferrari has been hailed for its thumping performance and responsiveness matching that of non-turbo engines. It’s used in the 488 GTB developing 670hp and has been recently honed to 720hp in the 488 Pista.

Porsche’s 3.0-litre bi-turbo flat-six took second place and reconfirms that the engine-downsizing trend is here to stay. In third was Ferrari’s 6.5-litre V12.

Due to the rise of electric vehicles, a new category has been created called Electric Engine of the Year. The winner was Tesla for its Model S, X and 3 followed by BMW (i3) and General Motors (Chevrolet Bolt).

The yearly contest is judged by various motoring journalists around the world. The sole representative from Thailand is from the Bangkok Post.

For the first time, no diesel engines have taken any honours in the whatsover categories. The other winners and runners-up were as follows:
