Former world champion Damon Hill has accused Ferrari’s drivers of behaving like children.
Sebastian Vettel collided with Charles Leclerc in the final laps of Sunday’s Brazilian Grand Prix as they vied for track position. Both cars suffered punctures and were forced to retire.
Hill, the 1996 champion, said: “I think you have to sit them both down and say, ‘Listen guys, you can’t just behave like kids with the team like this. You have a responsibility, both of you, to the team’.”
The Ferraris had been given the all clear to race each other for the first time this season and it summed up the rivalry between the pair and their bid to be considered the team’s No1 in the future. Despite their track coming together, Leclerc said: “I’m sure we are mature enough to put it behind us. For the future, we will continue to work together.”
Both drivers are expected to be warned about their responsibilities to the team following a debrief at Ferrari’s Maranello headquarters this week.
Team boss Mattia Binotto said: “I have not reviewed it yet but that is a silly thing that should not happen. There will be time together with them to discuss again what happened.”
Max Verstappen won the race for Red Bull, while newly-crowned world champion Lewis Hamilton was relegated from third to seventh after colliding with Alex Albon and denying the Anglo-Thai a first podium finish.
