Ferran Torres confirms why Man City blocked his Spain call-up to Tokyo Olympics squad

Ferran Torres says Manchester City blocked his participation in the Tokyo Olympics football tournament with Spain over concerns of his condition following Euro 2020.

Torres is currently impressing for Spain at the Euros and preparing for their quarter final with Switzerland on Friday. If Spain get to the final, they will be playing until July 11.

And then 10 days later, the Men's Football tournament gets underway in Japan, lasting until August 7, meaning Torres would have been playing virtually all summer. City also face Leicester in the Community Shield on August 7.

So it's no surprise that City were keen for Torres to get a rest, especially after a bright end to the season that could see him get increased responsibilities in 2021/22.

And Torres is accepting of the decision, telling AS: “I have not argued. I have to conform.

"It is true that a player needs a vacation because the season is long and you need to take a break. We are experiencing a very beautiful, very intense European Championship and the holidays will come.”

The Olympic tournament is limited to mostly players under-23, with Barcelona trying to get Pedri's call-up rescinded for similar reasons to City's decision to block Torres.
