Ferran Torres can make history and prove City don't need Harry Kane

Ferran Torres will lead the City attack today against Spurs in what is a huge opportunity for the youngster.

Playing and scoring against a Harry Kane-less Spurs would be the perfect way to show Pep Guardiola that he should be City's number nine going forward.

Kane has been left out of the Spurs matchday squad amid speculation over his future and City's open interest in him.

City are still confident that they can persuade Spurs to part ways with the England captain, but today Ferran has the chance to prove they needn't do so.

The 21-year-old arrived from Valencia last summer, and while he took a while to bed-in to life at the Etihad Stadium, he showed his quality with some brilliant performances.

If he opens the scoring today, Ferran will make Manchester City history. He would score the first City goal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, after the Blues fired blanks in all three of their previous visits.

Ferran scored seven goals in 24 Premier League appearances during his debut season at City, three of those coming against Newcastle in May where he showed his killer instinct and superb technique.

After impressing on the wing for Spain at the Euros this summer, Ferran returned to City and started up top in the Community Shield defeat to Leicester.

Ferran offers more of a physical presence than either Gabriel Jesus or Raheem Sterling offer, and that could play to City's advantage today.

Spurs start with Davinson Sanchez and Eric Dier at centre-back today, having sold Toby Alderweireld over the summer. Against an often-shaky pairing, Ferran could offer a disruptive presence in and around the penalty area.

Today, Ferran will be flanked by Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez, with Jack Grealish, Ilkay Gundogan and Fernandinho providing support from midfield.

Gabriel Jesus, the other main candidate to start up front, is on the bench.
