Ferocious Storm Ciara gales blow roof off primary school with children inside on Achill Island, Co Mayo

This Irish primary school bore the brunt of nature’s ferocious power as gales ripped its roof off while young children were still inside.

The terrifying incident happened at Dooagh National School on Achill Island at around 9.30am this morning.

The school is situated at the western end of the Co Mayo island and has around 40 students enrolled there.

In a Facebook post, the school shared photos of the roof's destruction, saying: “Some photos of the damage caused by the storm this morning.

“It makes us wonder what are the criteria for a 'red wind warning' for the extreme west coast of Ireland.

“Thankfully nobody was hurt but we are missing our flat roof.”

Principal Irene Gielty said that an asphalt roof which covers an area of around 200 square metres was blown clean off the structure.

She added that the roof went across the schoolyard before falling on a pitch.

The roof came off completely and broke up when it finally landed on the grassy area.

It also hit part of the boundary wall at the school.

Thankfully, nobody was hurt in the incident.

The roof that was blown away had been placed on a flat concrete roof over the boy’s bathroom, a cloakroom and a storage are to give extra protection from severe weather conditions.

The concrete roof wasn’t damaged, with Ms Gielty adding it would have to be covered again in the next few days to prevent leaks.

Gutters were also forced out of position during the high winds.
