Ferocious 110km/h winds to batter Ireland as Met Eireann issues four warnings

Ferocious 110km/h winds will batter 16 counties tonight as five warnings come into force.

Met Eireann has issued four different weather alerts in the Republic for strong winds, three of which are in place from 9pm and will continue until 2am on Thursday.

The first status yellow caution is for Galway, Mayo, Clare, Cork, Kerry and Limerick, with the national forecaster stating that the "combination of strong winds coupled with high tides" brings a large risk of coastal flooding.

This warning has been valid since 3pm, and will expire at 1am.

"Southwest to west winds veering northwest will reach mean speed 50 to 65km/h with gusts of 90 to 110km/h", it reads.

The same warning was then also put over Leitrim and Sligo, albeit with this not coming into effect until 9pm.

Further alerts were then issued for Donegal, Dublin, Louth, Wexford, Wicklow and Meath.

All of these cautions also say that winds will be strong, reaching average speeds of 50 to 65km/h.

But massive gusts of between 90km/h and 110km/h will batter all the above counties through the night.

Meanwhile, in Northern Ireland, Antrim and Down are under similar alerts, which are expected to end at 3am.

Elsewhere, tonight will bring frequent showers, with lowest temperatures of between 3C and 5C degrees, as well as continuing winds and the ongoing threat of coastal flooding looming large over several parts of the country.

Winds will ease as the night wears on.

Tomorrow, though, will dawn dry and bright, with spells of hazy sunshine, according to Met Eireann.
