The Fernleigh 15 won't go ahead as planned next month but Athletics NSW officials are working towards a digital version of the race.
The annual running event, scheduled for October 18, has been cancelled for 2020 with organisers making the call amid coronavirus restrictions.
"It's really unfortunate because we really wanted to keep building on the momentum from last year [1600 participants], but we just can't run it safely," Athletics NSW representative Daniel Laus told the Newcastle Herald on Thursday.
"We tried to hang on for as long as we could but we've decided to let it go."
Laus said the state sporting body remained hopeful of launching a virtual Fernleigh 15 on the same course, from Adamstown to Belmont, throughout November. Details have yet to be confirmed.
Meanwhile, the NSW Cross Country Championships are still set down for Dapto on October 11 and 12 pending COVID-19 protocols for travel around the state.
