Fernando Torres named as 'definite' future Liverpool manager, as Arne Slot sack talk ramps up

Arne Slot’s future as Liverpool head coach remains a topic of discussion after a difficult 2025/26 season.

The Dutchman’s popularity was boosted by a dramatic Merseyside derby win on Sunday, but questions are still being asked with Liverpool fifth in the Premier League and out of every cup competition.

Plenty of names have been mentioned as Slot’s potential successor, with many fans calling for the return of Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool icon Fernando Torres can become a 'great coach'

Ex-Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has also been linked with the job after departing Real Madrid earlier this season.

But another former Liverpool icon has been put into the frame by ex-Spain forward Fernado Llorente.

In an interview with Hajper, Llorente claimed his compatriot Fernando Torres could be a contender for the head coach role at Anfield.

“Fernando Torres as Liverpool manager one day? Definitely,” Llorente said. “He's taken a different path to Cesc Fabregas, he has been patient and has preferred to start little by little with the youth team, gaining experience.

“I think Fernando will become a great coach because he had an incredible career, knows a lot about football and has surely been preparing for the right moment to make the jump.”

Torres is currently the head coach of Atletico Madrid B and has guided his side to third in their division this season.

The Liverpool job is likely to be much further down the road for El Nino, but his old team-mate Alonso has already had success at the highest level as a manager.

He has been linked with Manchester United as well as Liverpool, but Llorente expects him to favour a move to the latter.

"Knowing Xabi, I think he would prefer to manage Liverpool rather than Manchester United,” he said. "But right now he is a coach without a team, and if Liverpool don’t need to change coaches and Manchester United do and they make him an offer, you never know.

"In football anything can happen, we’ve seen many coaches manage their former club’s rivals."
