Fernando Ricksen fans line streets around Ibrox for Rangers hero's funeral cortege

Hundreds of Rangers fans, young and old, have lined the streets around Ibrox to pay their respects to former captain Fernando Ricksen .

The Dutchman passed away last week following a six-year battle with Motor Neurone Disease - he was just 43 years old.

Tributes have flooded in for the former Rangers hero and mourners have turned out today to give one final farewell ahead of his funeral at 2pm in Glasgow's Hillhead area.

The service will take place at Wellington Church, followed by a private family service at Linn Crematorium.

Fans wearing scarves and football strips lined Edmiston Drive waiting for the cortege to stop outside the main gates of Ibrox .

Some were given Order of Service booklets while they wait.

Our reporter, Calum Louden, at the stadium commented: "There seems to be a sombre tone to the atmosphere, with a real tinge of sadness throughout the large mixed crowd.

"People have come down to the stadium on their lunch breaks, there are many people in suits and you can hear bagpipes playing throughout the air.”

spent six years with Rangers at Ibrox, winning two trebles and captained the team to title success on one of their most famous days - Helicopter Sunday.

The former Dutch international, who picked up a dozen caps for his country, also won the PFA Scotland Player of the Year award alongside John Hartson in 2005.

Jim Boyd, who had come to Ibrox from Livingston, West Lothian, where Rangers play on Wednesday night, told the PA news agency: "He was solid, he was just brilliant.

"It's sad but proud as well, it just shows you how much people liked the guy as a footballer and a person.

"I'd met him a couple of times at the training and he always took time out to take pictures and sign stuff.

"He could have a laugh with you and stop and talk to you, he was really good."

Stefan Souttar, had only watched highlights of Ricksen but said: "You see all the different clubs here (among the tributes). I've seen a Villarreal scarf and all the Celtic tops.

"It just shows he was a well-liked guy. Even though there's the Rangers and Celtic rivalry, they still come together for respect. "

Dick Advocaat swooped to sign the then-24-year-old for Rangers from AZ Alkmaar for a fee of just under £4million in 2000.

He publicly revealed his diagnosis in October 2013 and played a vital role in raising awareness and money for MND.

Former teammates and current players, including manager Stephen Gerrard, will pay their respects at his funeral service.

He is survived by his wife Veronika and daughter Isabella, seven.
