Fernando Alonso spotted in ultra-rare multi-million-dollar Mercedes in Monaco

Two-time Formula 1 champion Fernando Alonso has been spotted driving his multi-million-dollar Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR around the streets of Monaco during the winter break.

Footage of the Spanish driver quickly emerged on social media as he took his homologation special out in Monte Carlo, catching the attention of fans both in person and online. "This must be his most rare (and expensive) hypercar yet," one fan commented on Reddit, while another added: "Emphasis on rare. Such a beautiful piece of machinery."

"That 1414 number plate too. El Padre is living the life," someone else commented, while another wrote: "Pretty sure this man has the best taste in road cars. Which is weird, given his taste in racing cars has been historically awful."

The ultra-rare car, from the late 1990s, was built by Mercedes-AMG to compete in the 1997 FIA GT Championship. It also competed in the same championship the following year, as well as the 1998 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The V12 engine produces 622 horsepower and 539 lb ft of torque, allowing the car to reach a top speed of 199 mph and go from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.8 seconds.

Only 28 of the road-legal homologation versions were produced: two prototypes, 20 coupés and six roadsters, meaning Alonso's coupé is just one of 20. Various reports value the car between $4million and $10million.

Alonso finished the 2025 F1 season 10th in the drivers' standings with 56 points, 23 points ahead of his Aston Martin team-mate Lance Stroll, who finished 16th with 33 points. The Spaniard is in contract with the Silverstone outfit until the end of 2026. The team will join forces with its new engine partner, Honda, next year, and should feel the full effects of Adrian Newey, who joined the team as managing technical partner in 2025 and will also assume the role of team principal in 2026.
