Fernandinho slams Super League and explains why Man City squad had different plan to Liverpool

Fernandinho has joined the chorus of football voices speaking out against the European Super League and explained the approach taken by Man City's squad.

The breakaway project fell apart on Tuesday night when all six English clubs involved, including Liverpool, confirmed they would no longer to proceeding with the competition.

Jurgen Klopp's players, led by Jordan Henderson, had taken to social media earlier in the day to voice their own opposition after vice-captain James Milner had confirmed he didn't want the European Super League to happen following the Reds' draw with Leeds United on Monday night.

And after Man City's victory over Aston Villa on Wednesday, Fernandinho confirmed his own opposition to the plans and revealed what was said in the dressing room prior to the European Super League's collapse.

*How should football respond to the European Super League? Take our quick fan survey.

"Well, it’s been crazy. Since Saturday after the Chelsea defeat in the FA Cup semi-final, the guys were a little bit down," he told Sky Sports.

"On Monday, this Super League came up, we were a little bit surprised, but in the end, I think it was the good sense and the right thing to do.

"I think everyone who loves football didn’t support the Super League, including our players and our club. We’re so happy now because everything has turned around. For sure, it was a little bit of a surprise for everyone.

"Of course, it’s a tough situation. You just want to find out from the people at the top of the club to find out the reason they are there, together with the other clubs.

"We wanted to say that we were against it, but we had a chat between the players and we all agreed to wait for the club and the statement. We are happy because football wins, football fans win."
