Fernandinho's x-rated VAR outburst after Man City crash out of Champions League

Fernandinho was livid as Manchester City controversially crashed out of the Champions League, slamming: "F*** VAR."

The Brazilian gave the two-word response in the mixed zone after the game as the Blues' quadruple hopes were left in tatters by Tottenham .

City thought they had scored the goal that would have sent them into the last four to take on Ajax when Raheem Sterling struck what would have been his hat-trick in stoppage time.

But VAR was consulted and found Sergio Aguero was offside in the build-up to the goal - sending Spurs through into the semi-finals.

Aguero had scored earlier in the second half which would have been enough for Pep Guardiola's side, before Fernando Llorente bundled in from a corner.

Why Fernando Llorente's goal would be automatically disallowed next season

That goal was also referred to VAR for a potential handball, but after the referee viewed the replay at the side of the pitch, he decided it would stand.

The ball appeared to brush Llorente's arm before going into the goal off his hip, and the referee was happy with what he watched.

In a breathless first quarter, City took a 3-2 lead.

Sterling opened the scoring before a quickfire Son Heung-min double put Spurs 2-1 up on the night.

Bernardo Silva levelled it up before Sterling also grabbed his brace.

City will now focus on the FA Cup final against Brighton and beating Liverpool to the league title to try and seal a domestic treble.

The Reds, meanwhile, will face Barcelona in the last four of the Champions League after hammering Porto to reach the semi-finals.
