Fernandinho makes damning Man City top-four assessment after "painful" Tottenham loss

Manchester City star Fernandinho claims his side's Champions League spot is far from wrapped up following their 2-0 loss at Tottenham.

Pep Guardiola will have left north London wondering how his side, who dominated for large periods, didn't pick up at least a point.

They still hold a 14-point lead over Tottenham in fifth, but their Brazilian linchpin believes their place at Europe's top table next year is not yet secure.

" Liverpool have practically won the league now, with how far ahead they are," he told ESPN Brazil.

"We need to be careful because from now until the end of the season, we could lose more points and, subsequently, our [second] place in the table.

"We could even finish outside the Champions League places. I hope next week we get a positive reaction from our fans at home because it is more than needed."

Fernandinho bemoaned the fact the visitors could not make their advantage tell, which they must accept responsibility for.

It has been a recurring theme for City this season who have not been clinical in front of goal.

One of their big issues is converting from 12 yards as Ilkay Gundogan became the third player to miss from the spot this season and the 34-year-old insists it cannot continue.

"It's a bit difficult. It's a painful defeat, especially given how we played," he added.

"We continue to create chances but are not clinical enough. We missed another penalty, continued to miss chances and then they scored twice.

"This has been our season. It's clear that conversations are important because we can't let things go on like this."
