Fernandinho impressed by Rodri start in crucial Man City position

Fernandinho does not think Rodri will need much advice as he backed the midfielder have a big impact at Manchester City .

The club broke their transfer record to sign the Spaniard from Atletico Madrid and Pep Guardiola has already given him serious praise after watching him closely in pre-season and the opening Premier League bouts.

Nobody knows how difficult the holding role is in this City team better than Fernandinho , who has been one of the outstanding players over the last three years and an integral part of their two title wins in that time.

Fernandinho is still expected to play a significant role - especially after Aymeric Laporte's injury - and Rodri will take on any of the veteran's experience that he can, but from what the Brazilian has seen so far he doesn't think he needs any help.

"I think he understands," he said. "The way he has started, the way the opponents play and how physical he is I think he's going to have a big, big impact for us as a player.

"If he needs anything we are here to help him but of course he has already shown his quality and we are so glad for him."

Rodri has also thrown his hat into the ring to fill in at centre-back if Guardiola needs it but watched Fernandinho come in behind him against Brighton after Laporte's injury.

The idea of Fernandinho and Rodri in the same team had been mooted but alongside each other rather than one in front of the other. However, after a promising performance against Brighton that included stopping a goalbound effort from Leandro Trossard, Fernandinho has staked his claim for a place alongside Nicolas Otamendi, or John Stones when he returns.

Judging by his reaction, it is an experiment Rodri would gladly welcome again.

"It's great to have team-mates who can adapt to other positions," said the 23-year-old.

"Fernandinho is a great player, he can play also as a centre back. He's done very well there [against Brighton], he was great. And he took on the responsibility to take the ball, so it's good for the team."
