Fern Britton and Phil Schofield's explosive relationship and final bitter row

While hosting popular breakfast TV show This Morning for seven years together, Fern Britton and Phil Schofield looked like the perfect daytime TV duo.

But behind the scenes, things were far from perfect for the presenters, as reported by the Mirror.

Fern and Phil have made no secret of the fact they feuded during their tenure on the show and beyond, with Phil openly admitting one heated conversation was probably the final straw.

Fern, 64, quit This Morning back in 2009, and was replaced by current presenter Holly Willoughby, 40.

She went on to become a novelist and starred on various shows including Pointless Celebrities, Strictly Come Dancing, and her current show My Cornwall with Fern Britton which airs on Thursday nights on Channel 5.

There were some happy times between Fern and Phil, particularly at the beginning of their working relationship in 2002.

Phil, 59, had a savage but hilarious nickname for Fern - Minty M*nge - that was an in joke between the two of them.

Phil came up with the moniker when Fern dropped a bottle of mint sauce on the floor and it went up her nightdress.

He even referred to Fern as Minty live on TV, which used to make her laugh hysterically.

But halfway through Fern's two year £1.5million contract with ITV, she made the decision to hand in her notice on This Morning.

At the time, her friends claimed she felt "undervalued by ITV" and that she was "living in Phil's shadow".

There were also claims that she had found out she was being paid £250,000 a year less than her co-host, and reports Phil was earning three times Fern's salary when the duo were presenting Mr and Mrs together.

It was claimed he picked up £45,000 an hour while Fern earned just £15,000.

However, Fern firmly denied that she made the decision to leave This Morning because of salaries.

"I never discussed with Phillip what he and I were earning. I was happy doing the show and happy with my salary," she told The Irish Daily Mail.

When she announced she was leaving This Morning, Fern addressed the whole This Morning team and didn't mention her co-host specifically.

And when Phil was interviewed four years later he admitted that he and Fern no longer chatted.

Asked by Heat in 2013 if he still spoke to Fern, he replied: "No, not really.

"We were involved in the show and mates at the time, but we don't really. I see Phil [Fern's then-husband, chef Phil Vickery] when he's in This Morning... But we're not in touch now."

Around the same time, Fern told MailOnline: "I always say Phillip and I had an indefinable chemistry which seemed to work well on-screen, she said. We 'got' each other.

"We enjoyed a laugh. And viewers seemed to warm to that.

"But, like Morecambe and Wise, we chose not to live in each other’s pockets. We were a great professional partnership but we never went on holiday together."

That same year, she was absent from This Morning's 25th birthday celebrations.

Fern denied rumours she had been snubbed due to a feud with Phil and instead said it had simply been because she was busy.

In his autobiography, Life Is What You Make It, Phil addressed a blazing row he had with Fern which he believes was the final nail in the coffin.

Phillip said he and Fern argued in a makeup room in 2009 over the content of a show – and he was "stunned" when she accused him of "meddling."

Phil said: "I walked back into the makeup room and calmly said, 'Please don't do that to me again.'

"I think, for whatever reason, that was the point Fern decided she didn't want to do This Morning any more."

He claimed he had tried to "make it right" over the years but she had moved on and he "misses her deeply."

Fern and Phil's strained relationship was back in the spotlight in 2018, when This Morning celebrated its 30th birthday.

She was invited onto the show to share her memories of working alongside Phil, and it turned a little awkward when she was cut from the air - though the show explained it was a technical issue.

When she dialled back in, things turned awkward when she claimed she hadn't been invited to the This Morning BAFTA ceremony.

"Congrats on the BAFTA," she frostily told Phil.

"That was absolutely wonderful and brilliant. I would have loved to have been there but I didn't get an invitation."

Phil disputed this, claiming she was on stage in Scotland at the time.

Fern shot back: "I wasn't on Monday night, I would have come but I wasn't invited."

Phil later made a jibe on Twitter about Fern's memory.

He wrote: "Odd really, because she was invited and declined #memoryloss we’d have loved her to be there. A vital and much loved part of the show."

Another journalist asked why Phil had not assumed that there had been "some type of miscommunication rather than making a jibe about '#memoryloss'".

Fern retweeted the comment, remarking: "No. I had no invitation to decline."

It later emerged her agents had failed to give her the invitation after assuming she would be busy.
