Fermanagh programme to help young people with disabilities get involved in sports

A pilot sports programme in the Fermanagh and Omagh district is encouraging young people with disabilities to get involved in sports - and to just have a 'wheelie' good time.

The ' Wheelie Active Club ' aims to give a platform to children who have disabling illnesses and their siblings to try a range of multi-sports programmes in a new six week scheme.

Organised by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council in partnership with Disability Sport Northern Ireland, the programme will take place at the Fermanagh Lakeland Forum, Enniskillen and Omagh Leisure Complex as part of both centres’ Disability Hubs.

Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Siobhán Currie welcomed the programme.

She said: “One of the key outcomes of the Fermanagh and Omagh Community Plan 2030 is to ensure that all the people of the district are healthy and well.

"The Council recognises the importance of leading an active lifestyle and is pleased to be working with Disability Sport NI to provide this opportunity for our young citizens with a disability to try new sports and to have fun .”

Kevin O’Neill, Chief Executive Officer for Disability Sport NI said: "This is following a fantastic investment into specialist equipment by the Department for Communities and Sport NI, as part of a plan to get more disabled people active across Northern Ireland.

“The new Wheelie Active Club in particular will make a fantastic difference to lives of young disabled people in the area”.

Places on the ‘Wheelie Active Club’ programme are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Participation on the programme costs £12.00 for 6-week programme.

Starting at Fermanagh Lakeland Forum on Monday 16 September 2019 and at Omagh Leisure Complex on Tuesday 17 September 2019, the one-hour sessions will be delivered by fully qualified sports coaches.
