An MLA has called for a new footbridge to connect Enniskillen town centre with the new South West College campus.
Sinn Fein’s Jemma Dolan described the new Erne Campus at the former Erne Hospital site as “phenomenal” and said that a walkway connecting it with the town would be the “cherry on top”.
She said that she has written to the Economy and Infrastructure Ministers on the potential for funding for the project.
She told MyFermanagh: “The Erne Campus of South West College is phenomenal and it is something that I am very proud to have here in our county town.
"It shows our students that we are investing in them and we want them to stay in Fermanagh. And after seeing the campus, I have no doubt it will attract students from across the island.
“I think the cherry on the top of this development would be a footbridge linking the campus to the island of Enniskillen. This was included in the original bid but the funding wasn’t available, as far as I can recall.
“This bridge ties in with the theme of sustainability and nature that runs throughout the college as it shows off Lough Erne but gives students, staff and members of the public the option of walking, rather than driving.
"It will also inevitably help the local economy as it will mean thousands of staff and students are within walking distance of the Buttermarket and our high street, not to mention the accessibility of the bus depot.
“We all know how vital the footbridge linking Erneside to the town centre has been for the last 30+ years, so I have written to the Economy and Infrastructure Ministers asking them to source funding for this project.”
