A Co Fermanagh man is raising funds for Down’s Syndrome charities by having his famed long hair chopped after 15 years.
Garry Jennings, owns the Mayfly bar and restaurant in Kesh, and will take to the barber’s chair at the Kesh Community Carnival later this month to raise the funds for Down’s Syndrome Fermanagh and Donegal.
Garry has already hit more than £5,000 of his £10,000 target, with the campaign only started less than a week ago.
Garry told MyFermanagh : “I’m kind of famous for my long hair in the rallying scene so I thought I would get everyone together to try and raise a few pound for a real good charity.
“It must be at least 15 years since I had my hair cut short at all. It’s a long amount of time and I don’t know what colour it is underneath, whether it’s going to be brown or grey!
“We have half the money raised and we only put it up on Thursday there. A friend of mine Manus Kelly, who was killed at the Donegal Rally a few years ago was a great supporter of the Down’s Syndrome charities.
“It’s just great to see the smiles on the children’s faces – a lot of the children themselves actually want to come to the event.
“If I can bring a smile to their faces or even send them away on holidays then that’s what it’s all about.”
Garry is one of the organisers of the Kesh Community Carnival, which is hoping to return this year after being postponed due to Covid last year.
Garry said: “It’s a carnival that we organise in our own village ourselves and we are in the deep end now having to organise the carnival after a couple of years of lockdown.
“We do tend to do different things and we have sheep racing and pig racing, tractor convoys and tractor pulling, but the haircut will add a different dimension this year.
“I want to thank everybody for their support and no matter how small it is it’s going to affect the target.
“£10,000 was a large target we set ourselves and if we can reach that or anywhere near it, it can change a lot of them children’s lives.”
