Fergal Harkin 'clears the way' for Celtic director of football role as potential Eddie Howe partner makes big call

Fergal Harking has reportedly cleared the way for a move to Celtic by turning down an opportunity in Belgium.

The Parkhead club have identified Manchester City's football partnerships manager as a prime candidate to take on the new role in Glasgow.

Harkin could now join Eddie Howe as preparations are made to unveil the former Bournemouth boss as the club's next manager.

The Daily Record report Harkin has rejected Lommel because he's close to landing the job at Celtic.

Lommel, part of the City Football Group, are among the Premier League champions' multiple sister clubs.

Celtic are believed to have a deal in place to secure Howe and focus has turned to confirming his backroom team.

The 43-year-old wants to bring in his former Bournemouth colleagues Simon Weatherstone and Steven Purches after the Cherries' Championship play-off bid was ended by Brentord last weekend.

It's also said Howe has been handed a list of potential transfer targets by Celtic scouts, a list he will now assess.

Celtic have been linked with Hibs' Kevin Nisbet, St Johnstone rising star Ali McCann and Republic of Ireland international Robbie Brady following his release from Burnley.
