Fenwick unveils Christmas window in first-ever Facebook event and the theme is Wind in the Willows

The festive season well and truly kicked off in Newcastle after Fenwick unveiled it's iconic Christmas Window - virtually.

For the first time ever, there were no large crowds outside the store on Northumberland Street on Sunday evening when the curtain was lifted to reveal this year's theme - Wind in the Willows.

Due to lockdown restrictions, the event was live-streamed on Fenwick's Facebook page and thousands of people were able to watch the unveiling from the comfort of their home.

Fenwick said the safety of customers and colleagues was their top priority, so they asked families not to travel to the city centre to watch the reveal in person.

A section of Northumberland Street was closed to the public, so the window and surrounding area could not be viewed.

The live-stream began with shots of Santa and his helpers in the store and was followed by a look back at previous displays.

Santa then appeared on the roof and led a countdown before this year's theme was finally revealed to be Wind in the Willows.

Scores of people, from countries as far away as Canada, watched the Facebook Live and made comments on the post.

One said: "Fantanstic Fenwick. Just what we all need at the moment, Christmas cheer."

Over the years, Fenwick's Window has been inspired by children's stories and Christmas themes including The Snowman in 2018 and last year's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory display.

Other previous themes have included Paddington, Beatrix Potter, Alice in Wonderland, Gulliver and Oliver Twist.
