Fenwick's window unveiling goes horribly wrong as curtain malfunctions during big reveal

Christmas in Newcastle was temporarily put on hold after a Fenwick's window malfunction.

Crowds lined Northumberland Street to watch the unveiling of the festive fixture - but it didn't quite go to plan.

With Christmas songs playing, fake snow fluttering down and Santa appearing on the roof of the store, everything was going to plan.

After a countdown from 10, a black curtain was supposed to drop to reveal the 2019 display - but it went awkwardly wrong.

To the confusion of the families gathered in the cold to watch, the sheet put in place to hide the closely-guarded secret stayed firmly in place.

There was bewilderment and even a smattering of boos from the crowd who were ensured Santa's helpers were working to fix the problem.

A second countdown started, phone cameras were held aloft, the crowd held their breath... and, again, nothing.

It briefly looked like the whole thing would need to be put on hold.

Thankfully, after around eight minutes, staff managed to get the curtain fixed and, at third time of asking, the crowd got the reveal they wanted.

The 2019 Fenwick's window has a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory theme, a Roald Dahl family classic.
