Fenerbahce claim Mesut Ozil is finally closing in on Arsenal exit in January

Mesut Ozil could be set to end his Arsenal nightmare with a January move to Fenerbahce, according to one of the Turkish club's congress members.

The 32-year-old has not featured for the Gunners since March and was left out of Mikel Arteta 's squads for both the Premier League and Europa League at the beginning of the season.

Ozil, a Fenerbahce fan, has been linked with a move away from north London for some time and it seems as if he may finally be able to seal his exit from the club in the new year.

Murat Zorlu, who is a member of Fenerbahce's congress, revealed to Sport Digitale that he expects the German World Cup winner to sign for the 19-time Turkish champions during the upcoming transfer window.

"A source, who’s very well connected to the club, has told me that Mesut Ozil is likely to become a Fenerbahce player during the next transfer window," Zorlu admitted, before adding: "I would say 90% he will join us in one month."

Ozil is highly unlikely to remain at Arsenal beyond the end of the season with his contract set to expire in June next year.

The midfielder previously announced his intentions to remain with the Gunners for the remainder of the current campaign, but it remains to be seen if his stance has since changed.

"My position is clear," Ozil told The Athletic in August. "I'm here through to the last day of our agreement and I'll give everything I have for this club.

"Situations like these will never break me, they only make me stronger. I showed in the past that I can come back into the team and I will show it again."

Ozil joined Arsenal in 2013 from Real Madrid for a reported fee of £42 million and has played over 250 times for the club.
