A female student has become the second person to die on Ben Nevis in two weeks after suffering a "horrific" fall.

The 22-year-old climber was on a hike with three others on the Ridge route between the summit of Cam Dearg and Ben Nevis.

She tragically fell from 3,300 ft after slipping on the ice.

The Bristol University student, who has not been named yet, is the second young person to die after climbing the mountain after Patrick Boothroyd fell from 1,500ft when a ledge of snow collapsed, the Daily Mail reports.

The 21-year-old Cardiff University student fell on December 16, while climbing with fellow Cardiff student Leo Grabowski.

Mr Grabowski survived the fall, only sustaining broken bones.

John Stevenson, leader of Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team, said the rocks were “very icy at the moment”.

He described the female student’s fall as a “horrific one”, because of its location.

He added: “Our thoughts and condolences are with the young woman’s family and friends, it is a very sad start to 2019.”
