Female bus driver brutally attacked by violent thief in Dublin during early morning shift

The union representing Bus Eireann drivers has said that it is only a matter of time before someone is killed following an attack on one of their drivers.

These comments come after a series of vicious assaults in the capital in recent weeks.

The National Bus and Rail Union (NRBU) confirmed that a female driver was brutally attacked on Thursday morning.

The driver was targeted at Busaras as she was preparing to drive the 6am bus from the city to Belfast.

The NBRU said that bus drivers in particular could be pinpointed by those looking for cash.

Speaking on FM104, spokesman Stephen Nugent said that it was vital for safety screens to be fitted on their coaches.

This would give Bus Eireann drivers the same protection as Dublin Bus drivers.

He said: "It is actually extra shocking when a female member of our staff is attacked. I mean when we're going down that road where else are we going to end up?

He added:"We feel it's going to take, you know, are the government only going to react - is Minister Ross only going to react if some driver was killed? Is that what it's going to take to get these safety screens fitted? Because that's when it's getting too far."

Dublin Live contacted Gardai but they were unaware of any incident.
