Felling's busy Sunderland Road in 1929 and the same view in more recent times

It was 1929. The Tyne Bridge had been open for a year, and Newcastle United were recent champions of England, having won the league in 1927 - the same year Newcastle Brown Ale was launched.

Our photograph, from 1929, captures a busy scene at Felling in Gateshead and a section of Sunderland Road called Gosforth Terrace.

The road is busy with trams and horses and carts in an age before the motor car would reign supreme

The fact the route is known as Sunderland Road gives a clue to the function of the road - and where it headed to. It was the main link between Gateshead and Sunderland, and indeed between Gateshead and Hebburn, Jarrow and South Shields

Sunderland Road, Felling, Gateshead, in more recent times (Norman Dunn)

It’s quieter these days and has been since the opening of the Felling Bypass dual carriageway in 1959.

If you fancied a pint 92 years ago, you wouldn’t have far to walk around here.

On the left of the old photo is what was The Royal Turf Hotel, known later as The Green Mandolin. Further on, where the clock is, was the Beehive.

Felling’s history stretches back 800 years - and life in old Felling revolved around coal, chemicals, church and council. Even though it has faced its struggles, it remains home to a string of listed buildings.

The 1929 picture comes from the collection of local historian, Norman Dunn.
