FELLING has started on a famous T-shaped tree formation near the M74.
The National understands that work is actively being undertaken to clear the area of trees which has been given several monikers by Scots like "treenis woods" or the "cock of the north" due to its T-shaped appearance.
The small area of woodland, located north of Crawford and east of Abington, is visible from the M74 close to the border with England, representing one of the first sights drivers catch when driving northbound over the border.
A petition was launched last year when news emerged of future felling plans. It has since accrued more than 2600 signatories.
It raised concerns that the "iconic cultivation is going to be felled."
The petition has since been updated to confirm that the area will be replanted following the felling, meaning the eye-catching tree formation will return.
