Felicity Huffman to plead GUILTY in college admissions fraud scandal

Actress Felicity Huffman will plead guilty in the college admissions fraud scandal, prosecutors have said.

The Desperate Housewives star has been joined by 12 other parents and a coach in pleading guilty to charges in what has been dubbed Operation Varsity Blues.

Actress Lori Loughlin, the other high profile parent involved in the scam has not indicated whether she will plead guilty or fight the charges.

It's claimed they took part in a scheme run by mastermind Rick Singer, 58, that allegedly saw test results faked and coaches bribed to falsely admitted youngsters to top league universities under the guise they were athletes.

According to prosecutors, Singer was paid $15,000 to ensure that Huffman's 18-year-old daughter Sofia got a better score in her SATs in December 2017, either by assisting her with a test proctor, Mark Riddell, or by correcting her answers after she had finished.

In a statement, Mother-of-two Huffman said: "I am pleading guilty to the charge brought against me by the United States Attorney's Office.

"I am in full acceptance of my guilt, and with deep regret and shame over what I have done, I accept full responsibility for my actions and will accept the consequences that stem from those actions."

Huffman continued, "I am ashamed of the pain I have caused my daughter, my family, my friends, my colleagues and the educational community.

"I want to apologise to them and, especially, I want to apologise to the students who work hard every day to get into college, and to their parents who make tremendous sacrifices to support their children and do so honestly.

"My daughter knew absolutely nothing about my actions, and in my misguided and profoundly wrong way, I have betrayed her.

"This transgression toward her and the public I will carry for the rest of my life. My desire to help my daughter is no excuse to break the law or engage in dishonesty."

Riddell admitted his guilt in a plea agreement in February, and would take the exams for students or correct their answers at a test centre Singer allegedly 'controlled'.

Singer - who cooperated with the FBI during their investigation - claims he visited the couple's home on Los Angeles to talk them through the process and advised them to get a letter from a doctor or psychologist stating Sofia had learning disabilities so she could have extra time to sit the exam.

After receiving the letter, Huffman allegedly forwarded it to Singer, writing, "Hurray! She got it."

Sofia's final SAT score was 1,420 - 400 above the mark she achieved on a practice paper.

Huffman is also said to have considered using the same scheme for youngest daughter, Georgia, 16, but decided she was 'academically driven' enough to pass on her own merit.

Her Fargo actor husband William H Macy, 69, was not in court. He has not been charged.

Loughlin, 54, faced Judge M Page Kelley alongside her husband and co-defendant, fashion designer Mossimo Giannulli, 55.

They allegedly paid $500,000 to get their daughters Isabella, 20, and Olivia, 19, falsely admitted to the University of South California as row recruits.
