“Feeling Like A Jerk”: Man Bans Children From His Property Thanks To Entitled Parent

Many people become parents even if they clearly aren’t fit for the obligations. Avid readers of this site have likely read at least one cringey and disappointing story about irresponsible mothers and fathers.

This one you’re about to read is another one of those that’ll make you shake your head, unfortunately. Here, a man was accosted by an entitled mother who thought it was acceptable to leave her children in his backyard without him knowing.

A confrontation ensued, as the man threatened to get child protective services involved. Scroll down to see how the entire thing unfolds.

No responsible parent would leave their children unattended in a stranger’s property

However, a neglectful mother did exactly that, causing problems with one of her neighbors

Fortunately, things eventually got sorted out

Failing to provide guidance is one of the many indicators of uninvolved parenting

Responsible parents would never dare leave their children unattended in the property of a neighbor they don’t know. As the author mentioned, his biggest worry was that one of the kids would get hurt and he would be unfit to handle the situation.

Neglecting children is what uninvolved parents do, according to clinical psychologist Dr. Emily Guamotta, Psy.D. Unlike free-range parenting, which is about allowing children to grow, explore, and learn from their experiences, uninvolved parenting is more about distancing oneself from child-rearing responsibilities.

Dr. Guamotta says this type of parent will likely prioritize their own needs over their child’s and tend to act indifferently. They will also fail to offer supervision when needed.

“As long as their children’s behavior doesn’t directly impact them, they remain distant and comfortable with not offering any attention,” Dr. Guamotta explained, adding that they believe their children “don’t need their help” and “should learn to care for themselves.”

Dr. Guamotta adds that children of uninvolved parents may end up turning to substances when they grow older or seek substitute role models that may do more harm than good. The individual may also lack emotional and coping skills or develop self-esteem issues.

Sometimes, it may be necessary to educate an entitled person about the risks of their behavior

An entitled person can sometimes be so caught up in their own world that they forget about the consequences of their actions. In the story’s case, the irresponsible mother seemed to have overlooked the potential danger she put her children in.

And sometimes, calling out the person and reminding them about these consequences may be necessary.

Executive coach and workplace expert Stefan Falk advises doing so in a way that can make a person realize how their actions are affecting those around them, and how it may only pull everyone down, including themselves.

“If you approach the conversation from an authentic place, you might see a breakthrough,” Falk wrote in an article for CNBC.

The man called out the woman’s behavior and set proper boundaries by warning her about involving Child Protective Services. He handled their issue sensibly and, fortunately, found a solution in the end.

Most readers blamed the mother for her parenting skills, as some supported having CPS involved
