Patients infected with the novel coronavirus can have severe lung inflammation even in cases where their symptoms are mild, warns Tetsuya Matsumoto, an infectious disease expert and professor at the International University of Health and Welfare. He cites a sudden drop in blood oxygen levels, bluish lips, and labored breathing as red flags to watch out for when recovering from the virus at home.
"If you notice the warning signs too late, your life may be in danger," said Matsumoto. "By keeping a daily record of pulse oximeter readings and monitoring the health of yourself and your family, you can catch slight abnormalities at an early stage. If anything seems amiss, contact a dedicated consultation service, public health center, or family doctor as soon as possible."
