Feel the chill: Tasmanian temperatures hit near-record lows

The mercury plummeted across Tasmania overnight, with many near-record-low temperatures, and at least one August record broken.

The Warra weather station near the Hartz Mountains in the state's south-west plummeted to -4 degrees Celsius, its coldest August night on record.

Friendly Beaches on the east coast had its equal-coldest August night, with the temperature plunging to -0.1C.

Tim Bolden from the Bureau of Meteorology said it was a cold end to winter across the state.

"We've been down to -2C at Flinders Island, -2C in Launceston, -2C also at Wynyard, and -1C at Strahan," he said.

"But we have seen -8.2C at Liawenee, which is only 0.2 of a degree away from its coldest night this year."

Mr Bolden said it was a very cold run over the last three days to end winter.

But there is a break in the weather ahead.

Mr Bolden said there was a warm front approaching King Island that would bring rain on Thursday afternoon and evening, and raise temperatures.

"Temperatures will be climbing fairly high today, certainly compared to the start of today," he said.
