'Feel good story of the season' - How the papers reacted to Chelsea's win over Southampton

The Guardian

"Confidence is rippling through Chelsea at the moment," writes Jacob Steinberg for the Guardian. "Where there was uncertainty a few weeks ago, now there is growing conviction.

"It could be seen in Tammy Abraham producing the spectacular lob that lifted Chelsea towards their heaviest league win of the season and the swagger was there when Mason Mount found the chutzpah to sit Angus Gunn down before firing the ball beyond Southampton's goalkeeper, bolstering the belief that a bright future beckons if Frank Lampard continues to find the freedom to make his ideas work.

"This was a fine day for Lampard, who was cheered by evidence that finally getting Callum Hudson-Odoi to sign that five-year deal was smart business.

"A dazzling young talent whose future seemed to lie elsewhere before Maurizio Sarri’s departure flourished on his first league start of the season, running Southampton ragged with a display that showed why Bayern Munich wanted to buy him earlier this year."

The Telegraph

"Chelsea supporters must be hoping this transfer ban never ends," writes Matt Law for the Telegraph. "Nobody would have believed it could have been the best thing that happened to the club in years, but they have fast become the feel-good story of the season.

"And it is also benefiting England, as two of Chelsea’s Three Lions quartet, Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount, were once again on target to underline their huge potential for club and country.

"Abraham’s week just about sums up how the fortunes of Chelsea's youth brigade has changed since the club were stopped from throwing money at their problems.

"Having celebrated his 22nd birthday, scored his first Champions League goal and earned an England call-up, Abraham found the net with a superb lob to put Chelsea on the way to victory at St Mary’s."

Daily Mail

"The youngsters Lampard has introduced have injected a vibrancy and energy into this Chelsea side and dovetailed seamlessly with the more seasoned campaigners," writes Adrian Kajumba for the Daily Mail.

"Together they have thrived with the shackles taken off them and formed a team their supporters can love again. It is all a far cry from last season under Maurizio Sarri.

"There was more evidence of how things are clicking into place nicely for Chelsea at St Mary's which has become more of a happier home for Chelsea than Southampton recently.

"Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount scored Chelsea's first two goals and Callum Hudson-Odoi also impressed on his return to Chelsea's Premier League starting side, all good news for England boss Gareth Southgate who has the first two in his current squad and Hudson-Odoi in the under-21s."

The Independent

"Another good victory for Frank Lampard’s Chelsea, who are playing with real vibrancy and confidence," writes Harry Latham-Coyle for the Independent.

"Lampard was afforded time at the start of the season with neither clubs nor fans overreacting to a sloppy start, and thus was able to keep faith in his youth movement, and the injection of youthful energy into his side is beginning to bear fruit.

"Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori are all playing at a high level, and Callum Hudson-Odoi is back to add further potency to what now looks a complete side.

"One wonders if this precocious quartet would have been afforded such extended opportunities had Chelsea been able to recruit new players in the summer."
