Feds raid state Sen. Martin Sandoval’s Springfield office

Federal agents on Tuesday raided the Springfield offices of state Sen. Martin Sandoval.

FBI Special Agent John Althen confirmed Tuesday that federal agents were in the state Capitol conducting “authorized law enforcement activity.” Althen declined to comment further.

In a related move, agents were also at other locations Tuesday, a source said.

Sandoval was elected in 2013 and also chairs the Senate’s Transportation Committee. He is the latest Illinois politician to gain the attention of federal authorities. Sandoval shares a district with Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan, whose inner circle has also caught the eyes of the feds.

Since the beginning of the year, Ald. Edward M. Burke (14th) found himself under indictment for racketeering. Former Ald. Daniel Solis has been exposed as a government mole who began wearing a wire after the feds built a case against him. Ald. Carrie Austin (34th) is the subject of another grand jury investigation. And investigators also appear to be circling Madigan allies.

Sandoval did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
