The Biden administration is expected to extend the federal eviction moratorium through October for parts of the country hard hit by the delta variant of COVID-19, according to a source familiar with the matter.
The order will renew the federal moratorium for 60 days effective Tuesday and cover the “vast majority of the country,” said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity to preempt an announcement from the Biden administration.
That means the moratorium will now run through Oct. 3.
The move comes after a growing chorus of congressional Democrats, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., criticized the Biden administration for letting the federal moratorium expire July 31.
New Yorkers have still been protected from evictions in the interim, thanks to a state moratorium that runs through Aug. 31.
The expected federal order will cover New York because delta continues to drive a surge in COVID-19 infections across the state, the source said. Most other states are seeing similar spikes and will also be covered by the moratorium, the source said.
