FedEx driver shot in attempted robbery in Philadelphia; suspect dead

PHILADELPHIA _ A FedEx driver was wounded and a suspect was killed after a gun battle erupted during an attempted robbery Tuesday night in the city's Lawndale section, police said.

The 32-year-old driver was shot in the abdomen shortly after 7 p.m. while making a delivery in the 600 block of Unruh Avenue. He was able to drive his truck to an ACME parking lot on Oxford Avenue and was transported by police to Einstein Medical Center.

The suspect robber, a 27-year-old man, was later found unconscious in an alley behind the 1400 block of Creston Street in Oxford Circle with several gunshot wounds to his chest and back. He was taken by police to Einstein and pronounced dead at 8:27 p.m.

Police found blood and at least one shell casing on Unruh Avenue.

In an emailed statement, FedEx said: "We are aware of the incident in Philadelphia this evening. The safety of our team members and service providers is a top priority and we are cooperating fully with the investigating authorities at this time."

In response to a request for an explanation of FedEx company policy on delivery employees having guns, the company replied: "We are not at liberty to disclose details of our internal policies. All further questions should be directed to law enforcement."
