At the end of the regular season in August, the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup Playoffs build towards naming the FedEx Cup champion - the ultimate winner of a year-long points race.
Introduced in 2007, 15 different players have lifted the FedEx Cup, with only Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy going on to become multiple-time champions. Woods triumphed in 2007 and 2009 while McIlroy won in 2016, 2019, and 2022.
Throughout 2025, PGA Tour players have been competing in any number of the 36 FedEx Cup events throughout the regular season - which include all four Majors - to collect as much prize money and as many FedEx Cup points as they can in a bid to try and prevent reigning champion, Scottie Scheffler from going back-to-back.
Regular tournaments offered 500 points for the winner while the eight Signature Events handed out 700 for its champion - it was 750 at The Players. Additional event winners earned 300 FedEx Cup points. Any player who made the cut also picked up points and a pay check, leading to the final FedEx Cup standings.
Only the top-70 golfers earn the right to potentially tee it up through the remainder of August, with anyone outside that number eagerly awaiting the arrival of the FedEx Cup Fall series in a bid to ensure they maintain full exemption at the top table in 2025.

While Fall events begin in September, August signals the point in the season where the FedEx Cup Playoffs reign supreme.
Following a key alteration to the Tour Championship which was announced earlier in the year, here is how the full FedEx Cup Playoff format now works as well as everything else you need to know.
FedEx Cup Playoffs Format
The FedEx Cup Playoffs consist of three tournaments in successive weeks throughout August - the FedEx St Jude Championship, the BMW Championship, and the Tour Championship.
The top-70 golfers in the FedEx Cup standings after the Wyndham Championship enter the Playoffs with the same number of points as they finished the regular season with.
They then compete at the FedEx St Jude Championship in a bid to try and secure a spot in the FedEx Cup top-50 before the BMW Championship the following week. The same scenario is then true ahead of the Tour Championship, only with the top-30 spots up for grabs instead.

As was true in 2024, there are no cuts in any of the four-day Playoff events, with the first two tournaments awarding 2,000 points to its champion. Points carry over into the first two Playoff tournaments but reset ahead of the Tour Championship.
In the event an eligible player is unable or chooses not to play either of the first two tournaments, the PGA Tour states that "the field will be shortened and no alternates will be added."
If anyone who reaches the Tour Championship is unable to compete for any reason, disqualified or withdraws from the season-ending event, they will finish in 30th.

Regarding the season's final event, it will remain a four-round stroke play tournament across four days, but a couple of significant changes have been made since last year.
Firstly, although the total prize money has remained at $100 million across the entire Playoffs, the 2025 FedEx Cup champion will earn $10 million instead of the $25 Scheffler banked 12 months ago.
The World No.1 could still theoretically land $25 million in the space of a few weeks, however, given whoever leads the FedEx Cup standings through the Wyndham Championship will land $10 million, with an extra $5 million heading the way of the standings leader after the BMW Championship. Scheffler has a 1,362-point gap over second place, Rory McIlroy and is 2,211 points ahead of Sepp Straka in third.
Secondly, but arguably most importantly, the Starting Strokes format has been removed. In 2025, all 30 players who reach the Tour Championship will begin at even par and have an equal chance of lifting the FedEx Cup.

“We want the Tour Championship to be the hardest tournament to qualify for and the FedEx Cup trophy the most difficult to win,” said reigning champion and Player Advisory Council member, Scheffler, when the announcement was made earlier this year.
“Shifting the Tour Championship to a more straight-up format with a tougher course setup makes it easier for fans to follow and provides a more challenging test for players – which brings out the best competition.”
While reaching the final event is clearly the goal for all concerned, those in the Playoffs have all secured full status on the PGA Tour for 2025 and do not need to concern themselves with the FedEx Cup Fall.
Plus, making it through to the BMW Championship certainly has its perks as well. The top-50 golfers in the FedExCup standings are fully exempt for the following season at all events, including the Players Championship and all eight Signature Events.
