FedEx Cup 2019 win for Rory McIlroy who proves class in Atlanta

Rory McIlroy proved his class en route to clinching the Tour Championship on Sunday.

The Northern Ireland golfer was imperious as he held off the challenge of nearest challenger Xander Schauffele to win the race for the FedEx Cup and the £12m million first prize in Atlanta.

McIlroy - who began the final round a shot behind world number one Brooks Koepka - finished the tournament on 18 under par, four shots clear of the field.

It was a stellar performance from the four-time major winner at East Lake, who wins the FedEx for the second time in three years following his success in 2016.

"I never took the fight to Tiger (Woods) last year, and I wanted to get some revenge today," he said afterwards.

"To play like that and win the FedEx Cup is awesome, it is amazing how different things can be this year."

He added: "I think I have given myself so may chances this season, I feel I could have won more. But to win the FedEx this year, I am very proud of myself and I will enjoy myself tonoght."

McIlroy also paid tribute to his family following his latest win.

"I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for them," McIlroy said.

"My mum and dad are back home, I'm sorry I haven't rang this week. I will ring you later.

"My wife and parents-in-law are over there, they are making the trip to Switzerland with us tonight, I am playing in Switzerland next week.

"It is awesome to have them here, I can't wait to see my mum and dad very soon and celebrate this win."

The Holywood star added: "I am pretty tired, but I will enjoy a few drinks tonight."
