Federico Fernandez's message to Steve Bruce and Mike Ashley after signing new Newcastle deal

Federico Fernandez has extended his stay at Newcastle United and hopes that the club can win some silverware.

The Argentine defender has penned a new deal - understood to be for the next two years - and wants to see his side do more than just survive in the Premier League.

Speaking to NUFC TV about his decision to stay, he said: "The next step for me is to say to the club, to the boss, as a team we want to put ourselves in a better situation when we can compete for something.

"That is the step we are looking for. I feel confident I can still play for a couple of years at the top level."

Fernandez suffered some injury problems last season - including being hit by COVID-19.

Newcastle at the turn of the year were on a horrible run of form with a real fear that relegation to the Championship was on the cards, but the side rallied and produced the results that led them to survival.

Asked about his fitness going into pre-season, Fernandez reiterated the desire to see the club achieve better.

He said: "I feel good and hopefully I can have a really good pre-season.

"I think it's really important for the new season.

"It was a difficult season with the COVID but that is no excuse.

"We need to make sure we are in good condition and get ready for the challenge.

"We started well, finished strong - the consistency through the season is key for us.

"If we want to be in a situation when we can compete for something we need to be consistent - that is where we are looking in the pre-season.

"That is the goal - we all try to be in a better situation."
